A contractor can tell you the proper way to execute any project. Corriveau Contracting started in 1997 with a focus on painting. We are still considered to this day on of New Hampshire’s leading painting companies. With the knowledge we have gained we want to let you know what goes into the painting job you hire us to do.

After deciding on your color of paint, you still have decisions to make. The first decision is whether you choose oil or water based paints. This decision has been the spark of debates for years on which paint is better. The main difference between the two is that oil-based paints will need mineral spirits, similar to paint thinner, to remove it such as Klean Strip. Water based can be cleaned from your brush with soap and water.

Sherwin Williams defines the differences as:

  • Latex-Longest lasting finish and best gloss retention. Dry quickly and is durable.
  • Oil/Alkyd-Durability and stain resistance. Good in high traffic rooms.

This choice is related to which product you would rather work with as both apply in similar ways.

The next choice for you paint will be the finish you would want it to have. Finish coats are important because they will help protect the paint and allow it to last longer on the surface. There are three types of finish: “flat”, “Eggshell”, and “Gloss and Satin”

  • Flat-Either in a smooth or rough texture this is mostly seen on walls and ceilings. It helds the material with moisture and does not add any extra pizazz to the paint. It leaves the coat looking the way it did before. Flat finishes are a little bit hard to clean.
  • Eggshell-Having a slight shine too it, eggshell usually is used on wooden surfaces and will provide a hard wearing finish that is easy to clean. It is able to be used on walls as well.
  • Gloss and Satin-The best finish for high traffic areas, this hardwearing finish is used typically on wood and metal surfaces but also can be used for wall use inside and out. This creates a very shiny look to your wall and is easy to clean.

Specialty paints exist if you would like to go the extra mile, such as metallic finishes or floor paints, but the most important paint will be on your walls.

Typically, your contractor will begin with primer, then first coat then the finish. Today paint and primer in one paints do exist and are an option for when you need to save time. No matter what, the primer will always be used by for proper home improvement in NH with the right contractor.
